“Symphony and chamber orchestras, an opera and a world-class summer festival that brings first chairs from all over the country to perform in a smashing new concert hall, The Strings Music Pavilion, near the base of the mountain. "More and more, people plan their visits around who's playing in town," says MusicFest producer, founder and organizer John Dickson.”

Schools:

Steamboat Pilot: Steamboat Springs High School ranked among state's elite

“Colorado had 458 public, charter and magnet schools ranked. Steamboat’s 27th-place ranking put it in the top 7.5 percent of all high schools scored. Of the solely public school draw, Steamboat ranked 19th, putting it in the top 6 percent in Colorado.”

Skiing:

National Geographic: World’s 25 Best Ski Towns

“Northern Colorado is ranching country, and Steamboat is still an authentic, working cowboy town that has evolved into one of the most important ski towns in America. You won’t find cutesy false-front stores here, but you will find the city-owned Howelsen Hill, the longest continuously operating ski area in Colorado, where the town’s Winter Sports Club practices on seven wooden ski jumps contoured out of the mountain”

Aljazam: Paul Beban report from Steamboat Springs

"Forget football, this is how they do “friday night lights” in Steamboat Springs. The kids line up and launch themselves into the darkness, saturday morning, it’s time for speed camp and saturday afternoon, cross country skiing"

Chicago Tribune News: A Blue Jeans Experience

“But even with luscious snow conditions, Steamboat will never be voted the best resort in any of the big ski magazine rankings. The reason: Steamboat is a lot more ski town than resort mecca. Back in the mid 1980s the ski company's advertising agency used this slogan as part of the promotional campaign: "You go to Aspen to look; you go to Vail to be seen; you come to Steamboat to ski."

Skiing Alternatives:

Snowshoe Magazine: Soaking and Snowshoeing at Strawberry Park Hot Springs

“Strawberry Park is an enchanting collection of natural hot and cold pools situated along a river as well as a variety of affordable rental cabins and camp sites.  I was surprised to discover such a remote-feeling wonderland so close to town.”

New York Times: 36 hours in Steamboat Springs Colorado

“Steamboat Springs evokes an era when cattle ranchers roamed its streets and locals preferred Stetsons to ski vests. But in recent years, Steamboat has sought to shed a bit of its family-friendly image as a cowboy theme park and embrace its inner Breckenridge”

Family Travel Colorado: A quick history of Steamboat Springs

In 1875, James Harvey Crawford ventured over the wagon road at Gore Pass and took a liking to the Steamboat Springs valley. He brought his family in and established the first claim in Steamboat Springs. Shortly other families joined them, however the deep snows of winter discouraged much settlement.
